Just one bite, Performance/installation, Giswil, 2022
There is a local tradition in Adana, Turkey centered around the ritual of sending off sons to their one-year obligatory military service. The son will take a bit of the ‘simit’ the mother offers and the simit will be hung on the wall of the living room until the soldier returns home at which point the dried simit is moistened with water and fed to the birds. If he does not return, the simit stays on the wall as a memento of the martyr.
From this point, I made a performance with the help of my dear friend Gülay Çay. During the performance, we baked simits and offered them to the visitors just to have one bite. Later as a collective act we hung the simits onto the wall.

Sadece bir ısırık, Performans/Yerleştirme, Giswil, 2022
Adana’da askerleri uğurlarken yapılan bir gelenek vardır. Genç annesi ile vedalaşırken annesi oğluna simitten bir parça ısıttırır ve yolculuğuna uğurlandıktan sonra anne bu simidi evin salonunun duvarına asar. Asker dönünceye kadar bu simit orada kalır ve sağ salim döndüğünde kurumuş simit suda ıslatılarak kuşlara yem olarak verilir. Simit burada kısmet olarak kullanılır ve o kısmetin askeri sağ salim eve getireceğine dair bir inanış vardır. Eğer asker sehit düşerse o simit duvarda asılı kalır ve o evde şehit düşmüş bir gencin yaşadığının simgesi haline gelir.
Bu noktadan yola çıkarak, sevgili arkadaşım Gülay Çay ile ‘Sadece Bir Isırık’ adlı performansımızı gerçekleştirdik. Performans boyunca simit yaptık ve onları ziyaretçilere sunduk. Bir ısırıktan sonra hep birlikte onları duvara astık.
